Faculty: Batch Download Student Assignment Files
Posted by Hart Wilson, Last modified by Hart Wilson on 26 April 2017 01:45 PM

Download allStudent assignment files can easily be downloaded in a single batch. Moodle will assign the student's name and the name of the assignment to each file submitted, so each file will have a unique name when it is downloaded.

Download All Submissions
Follow these steps to download all of the files associated with an assignment:

  1. Click on the name of the assignment to open it.
  2. In the Settings block on the left hand side, click on Download all submissions in the Assignment administration area.
  3. Save the resulting zip file to your computer.
  4. Open each file to view or print it, or extract all files to save and edit them on your computer.

Download Select Submissions
Being able to download all of the submissions to an assignment link is really handy. In Moodle 3.1, we can select just a handful of assignments if we wish, rather than having to download all of them. It's also possible to have multiple files submitted by each student downloaded in folders to make them easier to manage on your computer.

Prevent Downloading in Folders
While it can be convenient to have student submissions downloaded in individual folders, it can also be hugely inconvenient! To turn that option off, uncheck the Download submissions in folders box shown at the bottom of the image below.

To access these options, use the View all assignments link.

This approach mimics (in a good way) the Blackboard function of downloading submitted papers/files. If you follow Hart's instructions above, and then open the .zip file that is downloaded, you'll see that each file has the student's name appended to the front of the file name. If you download files individually - like in the View Submissions window, you don't get that.

However, under Moodle 2.x the student names appended in the front are done FirstName_LastName. When you look at the list of student submissions in a directory on your computer, they are in alpha order by first name.

It would be a big help, and something to suggest to either Joule or Moodle, to have the student names appended as LastName_FirstName
