How to Install the EMS Desktop Client for Windows

Authors list

This knowledgebase article describes how to download and install the EMS Desktop Client for Windows PCs. Please note that this installation only installs the client for your user profile; all other users of the computer will have to follow these instructions as well if they need access to the client.

Step 1 - Navigate to the EMS Desktop Client Installation webpage

Go to this website in your browser and click on the Download and Install the EMS Desktop Client link. If the download fails to trigger you may want to turn off the popup blocker.

Click here for a Firefox browser tutorial on how to do that.

Click here for an Edge browser tutorial on how to block pop ups and if you scroll down a bit there should be a section on how to allow.

Click here for a Google Chrome browser tutorial on how to do that.

Note

If your pop-up blocker does pick it up after clicking Download and Install the EMS Desktop Client button, you may still allow pop ups through a quick menu.

Note

You may get your browser only blocking the emswebdeployconfiguration.cfg file, which you can allow by clicking your downloads button that usually appears after downloading something, and then selecting the file that was blocked for options and then allowing it to be downloaded. (Edge has a keep option for example.)

Step 2 - Find and Launch the EMSApplication.exe File

The easiest way to do this in Mozilla Firefox is to click on the Downloads arrow in the top-right toolbar and then click on the EMSApplication.exe entry in the menu, but you can also locate the file yourself by looking in your Downloads folder (or whichever folder you selected when saving the files).

As long as the EMSApplication.exe file and the emswebdeployconfiguration.cfg files are in the same directory, you should not encounter any errors installing the application. You will know that it is working if you see the following window:

Followed by:

If you run the installer without the configuration file in the same directory, you will see the following window instead.  If necessary enter the following: https://ems.sou.edu/EMSDesktopWebDeploy or if prompted for the AppFacadeUrl.

If you encounter this error, close the program and repeat Step 1. Be sure to save the configuration file to the exact same directory as the installer.

Step 3 - Create Shortcuts

Congratulations! The EMS Desktop Client is now installed on your Windows PC. The last step you might want to perform is to create convenient shortcuts to this application on the desktop, the Start Menu, or the taskbar. Please contact your Computing Coordinator if you need help with that or any step of this process.
