How to fix WiFi connection problems on Mac: Wireless Diagnostics

In Mac OS X 10.8.4 Apple introduced a new tool called Wireless Diagnostics that can be used to help you get more from your wireless connection. It doesn't automatically change any settings, but can offer good advice on how to get the most from your Mac. Most of what it provides is more useful for advanced users but it may offer some useful advice after it generates the report.

Here's how to use Wireless Diagnostics:

  1. Hold Option (Alt) and Click on the AirPort icon on the righthand side of the top menu bar.

    1. 11-Network-Options.jpg

  2. Choose “Open Wireless Diagnostics”

The first thing you'll notice is a dialog box explaining that as well as diagnosing problems with your WiFi network. You may either answer the additional information questions if you wish or just click continue. Wireless Diagnostics can monitor your network for 'intermittent connectivity failures'. After the report is done it shall generate a report and store it where it stated, which is usually in a directory called var/tmp which might be under the directory of YourDrive/private. If you want to try and see what you may be able to make sense of in the report it is recommended that you look at .txt files.

When it has finished generating that report it shall provide some suggestions on how to attempt to address your issues. It shall provide more details specific to your issues if you click the Information-i.jpg marks located at the right side of the page. After you click Done, your report will be brought up so you may do what you wish with that.

Instead, if you want to see your network performance then you will want to bring up Activity Monitor.

  1. Start by pressing and holding Command and then pressing space (Cmd + Space)
