SOU offers remote access to a full Windows desktop using Microsoft's Remote Desktop Services. This service is available on any device that supports an RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) client, including Windows, Macintosh, Linux, iOS, and Android.
There are two supported free client options available. If you have access to the Mac App Store, download the Microsoft Remote Desktop app.
Instructions for connecting using the Mac Store App
To begin using remotedesktop.sou.edu on Macintosh OS X with the Mac Store App, locate the Microsoft Remote Desktop in your dock or on your hard drive by clicking Go...Applications. Follow these instructions for connecting.
After starting Microsoft Remote Desktop app, you should see the window below.
Click New and you should see the window below.
Follow the screenshot above or enter the following information:
- For the Connection name field, enter virtuallab.sou.edu
- For the PC name field, enter virtuallab.sou.edu
- For the User name field, enter SOU\yourSOUusername where yourSOUusername is your SOU network account name
- For the Password field, enter your SOU network account password
After entering this information, click File...Close. You be returned to the main window. Just double-click on the connection labeled virtuallab.sou.edu to begin.
To begin using remotedesktop.sou.edu on Macintosh OS X with the older Microsoft client, locate the Remote Desktop Connection in your dock or on your hard drive by clicking Go...Applications. Follow these instructions for connecting.
After starting Remote Desktop Connection, you should see the window below. You will need to type
virtuallab.sou.edu in the Computer field.
If this is your first time connecting to virtuallab.sou.edu, click Preferences in the Menu bar like shown below.
After clicking Preferences, you will see a new window with additional settings.
In the Username field, type in your SOU username. Type SOU in the Domain field. Entering your password here is optional, if you do not, you will be prompted for it later. When you are finished, click the red button in the upper left of the window to close it. You will be returned to the RDC window.
Click Connect to continue. If you didn't supply a password earlier, you will prompted it for it here. You will now be connected to virtuallab.sou.edu, which is just like using a lab computer on campus. Make sure to save your files to your P, S, or X drives.
After your connection ends, Remote Desktop Connection will ask if you want to save your configuration changes. Click Save or you will be required to re-enter all of this information again.
